Duchy of Cornwall 11/02/2009

At 5pm on Wednesday 11th February Mr George will meet with specialists in the House of Commons Library to discuss his ongoing research into constitutional aspects of the Duchy of Cornwall. Mr George has been researching the historical legal privileges granted to the Duchy in the 14th century in order to investigate whether these are still applicable and even useful to Cornwall and Scilly in meeting its ambitions for future constitutional development.

DOCHRA Comment:

We have to give Andrew George credit for his persistence on this matter over the years. The meeting described above is a further welcome development and we would be interested to see what, if anything, transpired from it.

It should be noted that many of the legal distinctions between Cornwall and England referenced in the three Duchy Charters of 1337-38 were not new, and they were not ‘grants’. The Charters merely summed–up and confirmed in a formal way a situation that was already largely in existence. For a fuller account, see Our Future is History [2002].
